GARNER, NORTH CAROLINA · Living, bar, dining, entryGarner Nior
THE BRIEF“I want to bring these rooms together.”
The Bensons moved from Philadelphia to a newly built home in North Carolina. The house was nice. It did not feel like theirs.
For years, Mrs. Benson had been the one holding everything together, caring for family through long stretches of serious illness. She wanted a home that gave something back: a place to come to at the end of the day that felt like her own.
THE challenge
A place with
nowhere to land.
New construction arrives clean and characterless. Every wall featured the same builder-grade finishes, so the rooms blurred together and never connected. The living room, dining room, and kitchen shared an open plan, but lacked cohesion. The biggest issue: the living room had no focal point.
For someone carrying years of stress, a home with no anchor can cause more grief. A home void of a visual center keeps the eye moving, and unfortunately, the mind follows.
the CONCEPT
Brass and shadow
Restorative design starts with how a space makes you feel, then decides what goes in it. For the Bensons, that meant a home that lowers the volume.
Soft greige walls form a quiet field, and charcoal, black, and brass give the eye a place to land. Layered lighting keeps the house warm into the evening, when she needs it most.
ENTRY The first view sets the palette, lit warm from three heights.
DINING AND KITCHEN A crystal fixture claims the table, and brass pendants carry the line into the kitchen.
BAR we proposed transforming the mudroom into custom bar
OUR APPROACH Three changes, a
new feel
01
Keep what mattered.
We designed the space around their furniture, but added accent pieces to bring in depth, character, and contrast.
02
Create a center.
We designed a charcoal accent wall with brass inlay to anchor the room and introduce the contrast the house lacked.
03
Connect every room.
We carried one palette of greige, charcoal, and brass from the entry to the kitchen, and recommended moving the dining fixture to center it over the table.
the resultThe Benson home now reads as one home instead of a row of rooms, and it still holds the pieces that feel like home.
the revealThe first walk-through
“This is my house…?”
Mrs. Benson’s reaction says it all.
This is why we design for more than how a home looks. We design for how it feels to live there.
The Bensons trusted us to create a home that felt like them. We not only designed a home they love, but a space that feels warm, safe, and restorative.
