Benson Residence

A new home, made a personal sanctuary

THE BRIEF

“I want to bring these rooms together.”

The Bensons moved from Philadelphia to a newly built home in North Carolina. The house was nice. It did not feel like theirs.

For years, Lisa had been the one holding everything together, caring for family through long stretches of serious illness. She wanted a home that gave something back: a place to come to at the end of the day that felt like her own.

THE challenge

A place with

nowhere to land.

New construction arrives clean and characterless. Every wall featured the same builder-grade finishes, so the rooms blurred together and never connected. The living room, dining room, and kitchen shared an open plan, but lacked cohesion.

The dining room lacked any fixture over the table, and the living room had no focal point to anchor it. The Bensons valued the furniture they brought from Philadelphia, but they had chosen it for another house.

For someone carrying years of stress, a home with no anchor can cause more grief. A home void of a visual center keeps the eye moving, and unfortunately, the mind follows.

the CONCEPT

Restorative design starts with how a space makes you feel, then decides what goes in it. For Lisa, that meant a home that lowers the volume.

Soft greige walls form a quiet field, and charcoal, black, and brass give the eye a place to land. Layered lighting keeps the house warm into the evening, when she needs it most.

Brass and Shadow

OUR APPROACH

Three principles, one

standard

01

Planned around what stayed

Spaces with warmth, depth, and a distinct sense of identity.

02

Function

Thoughtfully designed around how people move, interact, and use the space.

03

Regulation

A room where your shoulders drop the moment you walk through the door.

the final design

This is the moment the vision becomes real.

The sketch gets color. The materials find their place. The teal wall deepens. The pendant glows. The chair anchors everything. We rendered the space iteratively — refining until every element felt right.

What used to take weeks can now be done in days. Shanel saw her room before it existed — and she approved every detail before a single item was ordered.

The Reaction: When Shanel saw the final render she got quiet. Then said, “this is it!”

A room that wrapped its arms around her before it was even built. That's the power of the process.
